Book Review: The Martian

"Well beggars can't be choosers. Three's Company it is."

The Martian by Andy Weir depicts one man's lone fight to survive the most hostile odds against all odds.

The story is told mostly from the logs of stranded astronaut, Mark Watney, as he fights to survive on Mars after a freak accident leaves him stranded. Intermittently, we see blips from both the people of earth and Watney’s crewmates as they desperately seek to save him.
Watney must use his botany, engineering skills, and just simple ingenuity to devise ways to live in complete isolation on a planet literally not fit for human survival. He does it with the best of attitudes, humoring himself with his logs, and old 70's TV, despite his dire circumstances.
After discovering he's alive, the entire world watches in horrified wonder as the brilliant minds at NASA race to save Mark.

Personally, I enjoyed The Martian. It explores a man's ingenuity and the culture that bands us together, forgetting budgets, fame, and even our own safety to rescue a fellow man. It is a more modern take on Robinson Caruso told with sarcasm and wit. The story moves quickly enough to keep you interested. It isn't weighed down with super scientific information, which considering the subject matter, it could have been. The switch between Mark's point of view, what's happening on earth, and the occasional third person narrator gives a 360 degree view of everything allowing the reader to really immerse himself in the story.
I would rate it PG-13 for language, but nothing else.  It's a great story I would recommend it for anyone looking to go on an amazing adventure.

In Search Of. . . Adventure: Weekend Highlights

Weekend Highlights that included my working. I didn't have a really busy weekend, and yet I did.

Friday I spent learning to drive a 13 passenger bus. That was an adventure. Saturday was slightly more productive I think.

My roommate and I got a bunch of books. Goodwill was have a 50% off sale on their books, and when you're getting to half off 2.99 it's hard to pass up.

This isn't all of them. I also got Metamorphosis, Fahrenheit 451, and more Michael Crichton Books. I need to write out a list of his books.

Today I worked. It was work, and I try to keep my work off line just in case I do or say something that the company may not like. Not that I would do anything, but you never know.

So, here is my outfit and make up.

And that is my weekend Highlights

In Search Of. . . Written Words: Books I'm Reading

So, after reading so much, I've been kind of off books for the past month. This came up and I still wasn't reading, but I thought it would be a good time to decide what book to read.
I could read the third book from Ransom Riggs.
Which would be good. I might do that.

Or
I could continue reading Michael Crichton. He's one of my favorite authors. I would probably read The Great Train Robbery
You guys tell me which.

In Search Of. . . Observations: Things that Inspire Me

In Search Of. . . Observations: Things that Inspire me

I hate it when someone asks me this question and I just stare at them, entirely confused.

 It just seems so ambiguous.
Are people asking if I look at this one thing, and suddenly I'm inspired. Nope, doesn't work that way for me.
My brain decides when it's inspired.
For me it's mostly things that lend themselves to situations and remind me of characters or things.

A couple of things inspire me to write.
Dreams. Literally, sometimes I wish I could record my dreams. My brain tells me some great stories.
Music.
Books. Some of the best sources of inspiration.
Shows I really like.
Sometimes art, but not the weird abstract stuff. More classical things.

For me, writing is a process. It's work. Unfortunately inspiration has less to do with it than just plain old elbow grease. Yes, you do get the occasional stroke of genius, but that only lasts so long. Sometimes you have to get through that bad spot. You know the one when you go back and read it again and ask yourself did a three year old write this? No, because he would have done a better job.
That phase.

This quote is the unfortunate truth.

I do have a few life inspirations.

It's really dumb, but I want to be like Jessica Fletcher, Angela Lansbury's character from the old tv show, "Murder, She Wrote." She always handled everything with grace and poise. I would love to be that graceful,  I'm so far from that it's not even funny, but see the above quote as to why I'm not there

Sometimes I get inspired by fitness and beauty.
The number on the scale and fitting into my clothes inspires me a lot.

So, those are the things that inspire me, loosely. Inspiration doesn't really do anyone any good if they don't apply it to their hard work.
